Free CE – Mold / Radon / Carbon Monoxide with Dan Tranter

The Minnesota Department of Health Indoor Air Unit is teaching its three free continuing education courses, taught in-person, for Minnesota real estate licensees. The courses are currently being scheduled at least a month in advance, for the next 6 months. They are taught at a location organized by the host, such as a real estate association or company. The courses are approved by the MN Department of Commerce for real estate continuing education credits. We can teach one, two or all three courses at a time and location that works well for your agents.

Radon in Real Estate Transactions

This course introduces radon, a soil gas that can cause lung cancer. The learning objectives include: health concerns; how radon enters buildings; radon testing methods; how radon can be reduced; radon disclosure in home sales; radon resistant new construction; and radon licensure requirements. It is a 1.5-hour traditional classroom style lecture course. Opportunities for question and answer are provided throughout the course.

Mold in Homes

The course introduces indoor mold growth, a common health and structural concern in homes. Topics include: the causes of indoor mold growth; potential health effects from exposure to mold; common moisture problems; methods to find mold; and remediation guidelines for mold problems in homes. The course is a 1- hour classroom lecture style course. Opportunities for questions are provided during the class.

Carbon Monoxide in Homes

The course introduces carbon monoxide, a significant poisoning concern in homes. Topics include: the causes of elevated carbon monoxide; the health effects; examples of problems; and how to prevent it. The course is a 1-hour classroom lecture style course. Opportunities for questions are provided during the class.

Required Module: Fair Housing, Agency Law, & Legal Update

By attending this 3.75-hour course, learners will complete the only required class module from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025. This Module Satisfies the 1-Hour Fair Housing, 1-Hour Agency Law, and the 1-Hour Broker Module Requirements. To get credit for the general module, the student must pass an examination taken at the end of the course (as part of the approved credit hours).

Objectives: Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

Review agency relationship options
Learn fiduciary duties to clients and customers as required in Minnesota
Receive an update on RESPA rules and how RESPA applies to marketing services agreements
Receive an update on the requirements under the new RESPA-TILA Integrated Disclosure form
Review the Uniform Condominium Act and the Minnesota Common Interest Ownership Act, the different types of properties covered, disclosure obligations and other rights
Learn about Fair Housing Laws, their history and protected classes
Learn about prohibited actions under fair housing laws
Receive resources for working with first time buyers and struggling homeowners

Mike Brennan was licensed from May 1995 until February 2012. He has taught pre-license and continuing education classes since 2003 in Minnesota, Nevada, Wyoming, Montana, Florida and Wisconsin. Mike’s energy and enthusiasm keeps students engaged and alert. Mike is involved with the Minnesota Board of REALTORS® and has volunteered for many committees, including Professional Standards, Nominating, Executive and currently is on the Board of Directors for the State Association of REALTORS®.
